Under the heading “Date Found” and “Date Completed”:
The dates found for all donated specimens are not known. There are also some dates of salvaged birds that are unknown due to incomplete records. This problem has been resolved and a strong effort is being made to complete our records although we will certainly never be able to find all of the missing dates.
Under the heading “Mount or Study Skin”:
Kulis taxidermy located in Cleveland, Ohio is the only taxidermist who freeze dries specimens so his mounts are all labled as “Freez Dried Specimens”.
Many of these birds have been donated to the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center. Donors include the following:
Tom Pike had a private museum that he started in the early 1900’s. After he passed away, his daughter donated his collection of 101 mounted animals, mostly birds, to the Wildlife Education Center.
Jeff Hum is a hunter friend of the Wildlife Education Center and donated a portion of his personal mounts of animals he has hunted over the years to the Wildlife Education Center.
The National Forestry Service station in the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota received donation of a private collection in 1993 and donated 76 mounts, mostly birds, to the Wildlife Education Center in 2005.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife has given us a Peregrine Falcon and a Snowy Owl that they salvaged.
The Minnesota Division of Wildlife gave us a Boreal Owl and a Great Gray Owl that they salvaged during the winter of 2004-05.
Dr. Courtenay Willis was a professor of Biology at YSU and donated her study skins when she and her family moved to Europe.
Dr. Bill Richter is one of the very best birders and nest finders in Ohio. He did some study skins and mounts early in his career.
Dan Kearns is a former student of Jim Kerr at Beaver Local High School. He is an excellent birder and is the person who got Jim Kerr interested in birding. He is now an environmental attorney in Portland, Oregon and he and Jim remain good friends.
Dr. Steve Kress is a vice president of the National Audubon Society and does seabird research in a number of places across the world. He is also an author and has written many books on birds and nature.
Jim Kerr is a retired biology teacher at Beaver Local High School. He knows Dr. Steve Kress through working for him as a Interpretive Naturalist for the Audubon Society at the Audubon camp in Maine.
Tom Bissler is the taxidermist who has done the majority of the mounts for Jim Kerr and has also helped to find dead birds for Jim.
Under the heading “Mounted By”:
Tom Bissler, Bill Haywood, Bud Schue, Kulis, and Gilbert White are professional taxidermists who did the mounts while all the others named are friends of the Wildlife Education Center who did the study skins. The taxidermist who did the mounts donated by the daughter of Tom Pike is unknown since they were all done prior to 1950 as is true of the mounts donated by the Scio Pottery Museum.
In some cases the taxidermists who did the other mounts that were donated are unknown also.
Under the heading “Condition”:
This is strictly a subjective rating done by Jim Kerr. Others certainly would give other ratings based on their experience and level of expertise.
